Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani has been awarded his third Most Valuable Player (MVP) honor after being unanimously voted the National League’s top performer.
The 30-year-old previously claimed the American League MVP in 2021 and 2023 while playing for the Los Angeles Angels.
Major League Baseball is divided into two leagues, the American League and the National League, each of which awards its own MVP.
Ohtani, who joined the Dodgers in December 2023, is one of just 12 players in history to win three or more MVPs. He is also the first player to win back-to-back MVPs in both leagues.
Ohtani received first-place votes from all 30 members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, surpassing the New York Mets’ Francisco Lindor for the award.
“I wouldn’t have received this award without my teammates,” Ohtani said. “I didn’t go into the season focused on the MVP. My priority was being a part of the new team with the Dodgers, blending in with the guys. I wanted to connect with the fans and let them know who I am. That was my main focus coming into this season.”
Ohtani’s outstanding performances were crucial in leading the Dodgers to win the 2024 World Series, marking their eighth championship and their first since 2020.
During the season, Ohtani made history as the first player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 or more bases in a single season.
In the American League, New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge defeated teammates Juan Soto and Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals to claim the MVP award.
