Earlier this offseason, the Yankees reportedly proposed a trade to the Cardinals that would have sent Marcus Stroman to St. Louis in exchange for Nolan Arenado, according to a report by Mark Feinsand, John Denton, and Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. However, the Cardinals declined the offer and never discussed it with Arenado, as they were not interested in acquiring Stroman.

While this specific trade scenario is off the table, discussions between the two teams regarding Arenado may not be over. The Yankees, still looking to address needs at both corner infield positions, are reportedly showing increased interest in Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. According to MLB.com, the Yankees believe that acquiring Goldschmidt might make Arenado more willing to waive his no-trade clause to reunite with his former teammate and form a dynamic corner infield duo in the Bronx.
