Carlos Alcaraz recently opened up about his lack of communication with Jannik Sinner during the Italian’s three-month doping suspension. While the two are fierce rivals on the court, their relationship off it remains professional rather than personal.

Though they share mutual respect and occasionally chat at tournaments, Alcaraz clarified that they are not close friends and don’t stay in regular contact. The two last faced off in a high-stakes match at the Italian Open, where Alcaraz emerged victorious, narrowing the gap in the ATP rankings.

Following the match, Alcaraz was asked whether Sinner’s recent comments — about being surprised by who didn’t check in with him during his suspension — were aimed at him. The Spaniard confirmed that he hadn’t reached out to Sinner during that time.

“I didn’t talk to him during those three months. It wasn’t about whether I supported him or not — I was focused on my own tennis and emotions,” Alcaraz said. “I wasn’t in that situation, so it’s hard to feel exactly what he was going through.”

Despite not contacting Sinner, Alcaraz expressed empathy. “I understand he might have been disappointed. It’s within his rights to feel surprised by who did or didn’t reach out.”

When pressed on whether he thought Sinner was referring to him, Alcaraz remained uncertain:
“I don’t know if he was talking about me. I’ve supported him when he was injured before — sent him good energy to recover quickly. But during those three months, I was just focused on competing.”

With Roland Garros around the corner and both players seeded at the top, a potential final clash between them could be on the horizon.
