The Winnipeg Jets have announced that 23-year-old forward prospect Henri Nikkanen has been placed on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract. Nikkanen, in the final year of his entry-level deal, has yet to make an NHL appearance and appears set to continue his career outside of North America.
AHL Journey Falls Short of NHL Dreams
Nikkanen, originally selected by the Jets in the fourth round (113th overall) of the 2019 NHL Draft, has spent his professional career in North America with the Manitoba Moose, the Jets’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. In 140 AHL games, he tallied 13 goals and 19 assists, amassing 32 points.
This season, Nikkanen recorded one goal and three assists in 13 games with the Moose. Despite his consistent presence in the AHL, cracking the Jets’ NHL roster was always a longshot for the Finnish forward.
Return to Finland Likely
Before joining the Jets’ system, Nikkanen spent parts of four seasons in Finland’s SM-Liiga, showcasing his skills in his home country. With his contract termination imminent, it’s expected that the Mikkeli native will return to Europe to continue his professional hockey career.
Trend of Prospects Seeking Termination
Nikkanen’s departure follows a similar move by the San Jose Sharks, who placed prospect Valtteri Pulli on unconditional waivers just a day earlier. Pulli, another Finnish player, requested a contract termination to return to Finland after limited opportunities in North America.
The Jets’ decision highlights the challenges many young players face in transitioning from the AHL to the NHL, as roster competition and development timelines often dictate their futures.
