Emma Raducanu is gearing up for the 2025 season with renewed motivation and a focus on playing more matches than ever before. The 22-year-old British star has struggled with limited match play in previous years, largely due to injuries and selective scheduling.
In her early seasons on the WTA Tour, Raducanu’s match count lagged behind her peers. In 2022, she played 36 matches, finishing with a 17-19 win-loss record. Injuries significantly reduced her 2023 season to just 10 matches (5-5). However, 2024 saw a marked improvement, with Raducanu completing 36 matches again but with a stronger 23-13 record.
Despite this progress, her match count remains significantly lower compared to top players. Coco Gauff, for instance, played 71 matches in 2024, achieving a 54-17 record. Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek each played 70 matches, with Swiatek boasting an impressive 61-9 record despite a one-month suspension.
Raducanu acknowledges the gap and is determined to increase her match participation in 2025. In a recent interview with PA, she expressed optimism about her new approach to training, which allows her to maintain fitness and improve her game while competing.
“I want to play more than I did this year. With my current set-up, I can keep working on the road. I don’t need to return home to stay physically strong. I can do microdoses of work daily, and I think that’s going to be a great addition for me next year, which I’m excited about.”
Raducanu has shifted her mindset from setting lofty goals, like winning tournaments, to focusing on becoming the best player she can be. She believes this approach will help her unlock her full potential.
“I feel like I’m in a good spot with my tennis. I’m curious to see how far I can go and what level I can reach. Staying healthy is a big part of that, and I really want to play more.”
With a fresh perspective and a focus on fitness and consistency, Raducanu is eager to test her limits and make strides in 2025.
