The Cincinnati Bengals find themselves at 6-8 with slim hopes of making the playoffs, and their star quarterback Joe Burrow is reportedly feeling the strain. After the team’s Week 15 win over the Tennessee Titans, Burrow’s frustration was evident.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer shared insight into Burrow’s mindset during an appearance on The Afternoon Drive Show on 92.3 The Fan.
“I think he’s really, really frustrated,” Breer said. “This is a guy who I think is as close to Brady as you’re gonna get in the league—just in terms of competitiveness and his style of play. I think it’s frustrating for him because he’s done a lot to change the face of the Bengals over the last few years. He’s been at the forefront of flipping the team’s identity.”
Frustration Rooted in Team Struggles
Burrow’s leadership has undeniably reshaped the Bengals’ reputation. He led the team to Super Bowl LVI and back-to-back AFC Championship Games, earning respect both on and off the field. But this season’s challenges, coupled with questionable decisions in the draft and free agency, have caused frustration.
“It feels like there are some ‘same old Bengals’ things happening,” Breer explained. “Their spending has cost them in certain areas, and they haven’t developed players in others. I think that’s a real source of frustration for him.”
Breer also warned that the Bengals must tread carefully:
“If you’re the Bengals, you have to be really careful not to piss this guy off to the point where it becomes a real problem in a year or two.”
Burrow Wants Support Around Him
Burrow’s remarks last week about the offseason hinted at his priorities. He referred to soon-to-be free agent wide receiver Tee Higgins as “a need,” reinforcing the importance of building around core players like Ja’Marr Chase and Higgins.
“Winning is very important to him,” Breer emphasized. “If I were the Bengals, I’d be very, very careful. I don’t think he’s going to sit around forever and let the things that have cost the Bengals in the past cost them again.”
The Bengals will need to address these concerns to ensure their star quarterback remains committed to the team’s long-term success.
