The New York Yankees’ search for a first baseman continues after Christian Walker signed a three-year, $60 million deal with the Houston Astros, as reported by Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The Yankees had shown interest in Walker as a potential replacement for Anthony Rizzo, who is not expected to return in free agency.
This development adds to an already eventful offseason for New York. The Yankees lost Juan Soto to the Mets, signed ace Max Fried, and traded for closer Devin Williams and outfielder Cody Bellinger. However, their roster remains incomplete as they search for a solution at first base.
The Yankees could consider shifting Bellinger to first, but they are also exploring other options, including Carlos Santana and potentially Pete Alonso. Securing Alonso would not only address their infield needs but also reclaim some momentum from their cross-town rivals, the Mets.
Walker, a 10-year MLB veteran, spent the past eight seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He has delivered consistent power at the plate, hitting 26 or more home runs in each of the past three seasons. His addition strengthens Houston’s lineup and poses a new challenge for the Yankees, who are already contending with the Astros in the American League.
The Yankees are coming off a strong 2024 campaign, winning both the AL East and the American League pennant. However, their quest for a championship fell short as they lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games during the World Series. New York hasn’t secured a World Series title since 2009, making their offseason moves all the more critical.
