James Tavernier has been ruled out of Thursday’s Old Firm derby due to an injury that will sideline him for a few weeks. The Rangers captain will miss the crucial game against Celtic after scan results revealed “clear damage.”
Philippe Clement, Rangers’ manager, disclosed this news during his press conference on Tuesday. He mentioned, “James (Tavernier) has picked up an injury, we took a scan and there is clear damage, and he will be out for a few weeks.”
Clement also provided an update on Leon Balogun, indicating a possibility of his return for the game at Ibrox. “There is a small chance Leon Balogun can return; we will see after his individual work,” he added.
Rangers are set to host their city rivals in the annual New Year fixture, aiming to reduce the gap at the top of the table and prevent it from widening further. This match holds significant importance for Clement, who is seeking his first victory against Celtic in his seventh attempt since taking over as Rangers manager in October 2023.
The most recent encounter between the two teams ended in a dramatic 3-3 draw, with Celtic ultimately winning in a penalty shootout in the League Cup final.
As Rangers gear up for this pivotal clash, the absence of their captain will be a considerable challenge. Fans and players alike will be hoping for a strong performance to kick off the New Year on a positive note.
