Former England goalkeeper Jack Butland has been rushed to the hospital with “internal bleeding” as Rangers gear up for their crucial Old Firm derby clash against Celtic.
The Rangers Review reported that Butland sought medical attention on Tuesday evening after suffering from a “significant” internal bleed. He remained under medical supervision overnight and was discharged on Wednesday morning. However, doctors have ruled him out of the highly anticipated derby to allow for his recovery.
Butland, currently in his second season with Rangers, joined the club in July 2023 as a free agent after his Crystal Palace contract expired. He previously had a short loan spell at Manchester United during the 2022/23 season but failed to make a first-team appearance.
The goalkeeper’s absence comes just weeks after he celebrated the birth of his fourth child. Prioritising family, he also withdrew from Rangers’ squad for their match against Dundee on December 21 to spend time with his wife and newborn.
With Butland unavailable, Rangers manager Philippe Clement is expected to start backup goalkeeper Liam Kelly. The match against Celtic is crucial, as Rangers aim to close the 14-point gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.
