Brisbane Broncos veteran halfback Adam Reynolds has hit a setback in his preparations for the 2025 NRL season, undergoing minor neck surgery following an injury sustained during a pre-Christmas training session.
Reynolds, a crucial figure for the Broncos under new head coach Michael Maguire, is set to partner former St. George Illawarra Dragons captain Ben Hunt in the halves to start the season. This pairing will cover for Ezra Mam, who is serving a suspension for an off-field incident.
According to reports, Reynolds experienced shooting pain in his right arm after a contact training session, which led to a minor procedure last week to address nerve damage and clean up the injury.
Recovery Timeline and Pre-Season Impact
While the Broncos are optimistic that Reynolds will be ready for their season opener against the Sydney Roosters, his availability for Brisbane’s pre-season trials remains uncertain. These include matches against the Gold Coast Titans in Toowoomba on February 16 and the Canterbury Bulldogs in Redcliffe on February 22.
Reynolds is expected to miss at least a month of pre-season training as he recovers. If he’s unavailable for the start of the season, Ben Hunt would likely shift to the number seven jersey, partnering either Jock Madden or young prospect Coby Black in the halves.
A Pivotal Season for Reynolds
Reynolds, who played only 13 games in an injury-riddled 2024 season, may be entering his final year in the NRL. With the addition of Hunt, the Broncos are well-positioned for a seamless transition should Reynolds opt to retire at the end of the season.
Brisbane’s 2025 campaign begins with a challenging clash against the Sydney Roosters, marking the start of a new era under Maguire’s leadership. The team will be hoping Reynolds makes a full recovery to guide them through the season.
