PITTSBURGH – While the most headline-grabbing news from the recent NFL Owners Meetings didn’t directly involve the Pittsburgh Steelers, the ripple effects will certainly reach them.
A proposal put forth by the Green Bay Packers to ban the “Tush Push” — a quarterback sneak play popularized by the Philadelphia Eagles (often called “The Brotherly Shove”) — failed to pass. It garnered 22 votes, just shy of the 24 needed for approval.
This development affects the Steelers in two key ways:
- Increased Usage by Opponents: With the play remaining legal, its use is expected to spread across the league — especially among teams with mobile quarterbacks, like division rivals the Baltimore Ravens.
- Opposition to the Play: Reports confirm the Steelers were among the 16 teams initially in favor of banning the play. Despite their stance, they’ll now face it head-on in 2025.
Fortunately, Pittsburgh’s defense remains one of the league’s best, which could help counter the effectiveness of this hard-to-stop play. There is also speculation that the NFL may explore adjusting alignment rules around the Tush Push, which could work in favor of teams with strong defensive fronts like the Steelers.
For now, though, the rule stands — and the Steelers will need to be ready for a season where the Tush Push is very much in play.
