Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens are making headlines again as they gear up for the 2025 NHL Draft — and this time, it might involve a bold move up the draft board.
Canadiens Set to Meet With Elite Prospect Caleb Desnoyers
According to multiple sources, the Habs will meet this week with Caleb Desnoyers, one of the top-ranked prospects in the 2025 class.
Why is this significant? Because there’s no realistic chance Desnoyers drops to the Canadiens’ current position at No. 16. This meeting strongly suggests that Montreal is seriously considering a trade-up scenario, likely targeting the Utah Mammoth’s 4th overall pick, which is reportedly available.
Why Desnoyers?
Desnoyers, an 18-year-old center, is widely regarded as the best Quebec-born draft prospect since Jonathan Huberdeau — with some even claiming he’s ahead of where Alexis Lafrenière was at the same age.
At 6’2″ and 178 pounds, Desnoyers had a monster season with the Moncton Wildcats in the QMJHL:
- 84 points in 56 regular season games (35 goals)
- 30 points in 19 playoff games
He’s a dynamic, play-driving center — exactly the type of player Montreal has been looking to build around.
A Trade Brewing?
While this doesn’t confirm a trade is coming, it clearly shows intent from Kent Hughes and his staff. The Canadiens are doing their due diligence, and if the meeting goes well, we could see fireworks before or on draft day.
With Utah’s pick available, the speculation is heating up.
