Jannik Sinner began his 2025 Roland Garros campaign in style — and not just with his tennis. The world No. 1 eased past France’s Arthur Rinderknech in straight sets, setting up a highly anticipated showdown with veteran Richard Gasquet, who is playing the final tournament of his illustrious career.
But while Sinner’s performance was impressive, it was his outfit that had fans talking.
Nike outfitted the Italian in a bold, almost entirely green kit — a color rarely seen in Grand Slam tennis. With only a white collar and Nike swoosh breaking up the green, the shirt quickly became the subject of internet humor.
Social media lit up with comparisons. Some fans joked that Sinner looked like a human Sprite bottle, with side-by-side photos of the drink and the tennis star making the rounds. Others said he resembled Luigi from the Mario video games, known for his iconic green attire.
The Italian beverage San Pellegrino also got a shoutout, with fans pointing out the similarity between its green glass bottle and Sinner’s kit.
After the match, Sinner changed into a long-sleeved version of the outfit — still green, but this time with a navy blue stripe across the chest and a collar. The look was unique on the clay courts of Roland Garros and drew even more playful banter online.
Even Tennis Channel joined in, posting that the outfit reminded them of Steve, the original host of the classic children’s TV show Blue’s Clues. The nostalgia-packed comparison earned plenty of laughs and engagement from fans.
Fortunately, all the jokes were made in good fun, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Broadcasters and fans connecting through light-hearted humor helps bring more attention to the sport in a refreshing way.
For Sinner, it’s probably a welcome shift in focus. The Italian star recently returned to competition after serving a three-month suspension following a positive test for clostebol at the 2024 Italian Open — a result he maintains was due to accidental contamination by his physiotherapist. Rather than fight the ruling, Sinner chose to accept the ban and move on.
Since returning, he’s looked confident and relaxed. He made a strong statement by reaching the final in Rome earlier this month, losing only to Carlos Alcaraz. Now, he’s eyeing his first Roland Garros title.
If his form holds, fans might be seeing a lot more of that green shirt.
