Taylan May could soon be making his long-awaited return to the NRL, with strong signs pointing to a potential signing before the June 30 contract deadline.
The former Penrith Panthers winger and Samoan international was recently seen touring the facilities of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, as reported by Channel 9’s Danny Weidler—a clear indication that a deal may be in the works.
May, who has played 30 NRL games and scored 17 tries, saw his career paused following an off-field incident. However, with legal proceedings now behind him and both the NRL and ARLC clearing him to return, all that stands in the way is finding a club willing to sign him.
The Rabbitohs, hit hard by injuries in their backline this season, could be the perfect fit. With Alex Johnston, Tyrone Munro, Campbell Graham, and Jack Wighton all spending time on the sidelines, depth has become a serious issue. While Munro is expected back soon, reinforcements are clearly needed.
If May signs, it’s likely he would begin his comeback through the NSW Cup to build match fitness, but a strong performance there could see him fast-tracked into the Rabbitohs’ NRL side.
Interestingly, May has previously expressed a desire to play for the Wests Tigers alongside his brother Terrell. Terrell, now with the Sydney Roosters, has publicly shared his hope to one day line up with both Taylan and their other brother, Tyrone, who is currently playing in England.
With the June 30 deadline fast approaching and clubs actively shoring up depth, May’s return to the NRL may be just days away.
