TVA Sports journalist Anthony Martineau continues to impress with his in-depth coverage of the top prospects ahead of the 2025 NHL Draft. He’s been speaking with many of the potential first-round picks, asking them sharp, thoughtful questions — and occasionally, those young players say more than they probably should.
That was exactly the case during a recent interview with towering Czech defenseman Radim Mrtka, who might have accidentally revealed a bit too much about the Montreal Canadiens’ draft intentions.
Mrtka didn’t hold back when asked about his interactions with the Habs organization:
“I felt a lot of interest from the Habs throughout the season. I spoke with people from the organization very often. I also met them here. They don’t think I’ll be available at 16, but I feel like they’re hoping I will be.”

There’s not much room for interpretation here — Mrtka clearly believes Kent Hughes and the Canadiens are high on him and would love to call his name if he’s still available at pick #16.
A Perfect Fit?
Mrtka also added that he thinks he’d make a great pairing with Lane Hutson, and models his game after Moritz Seider — a powerful, modern-day blueliner with size and skill. At just 17 years old, Mrtka already stands at 6’6″, 207 lbs, shoots right, and posted an impressive 35 points in 43 WHL games this season. He also has professional experience from his time in Czechia, which adds another layer of maturity to his game.
Could He Be Montreal’s Pick?
If Mrtka is still on the board when Montreal is on the clock, don’t be surprised if the Habs jump at the chance to select him. Everything about his profile — size, production, and upside — screams “top-pair potential.”
