Patrik Allvin Faces a Key Decision as Former Canucks Defenseman Travis Dermott Hits Waivers

The NHL waiver wire has been active recently, and a familiar name for Vancouver Canucks fans, defenseman Travis Dermott, was placed on waivers by the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday afternoon. TSN hockey insider Chris Johnston confirmed the move on social media, noting that Dermott is being waived with the intent of assigning him to Edmonton’s AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors.

This comes just a day after the Oilers claimed 24-year-old defenseman Alec Regula off waivers from the Boston Bruins.

Dermott, 27, has struggled to make an impact this season. In 10 games with Edmonton, the Newmarket, Ontario native has failed to register a point, logged two penalty minutes, and has a minus-three rating. After going unsigned during the summer as a free agent, Dermott joined the Oilers on a professional tryout (PTO), which led to a one-year contract for the 2024-25 season.

Could the Canucks Bring Dermott Back?

Dermott previously spent parts of two seasons with Vancouver after being acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs in March 2022 for a third-round draft pick. During his Canucks tenure, he played 18 games, contributing three points (two goals, one assist), with two penalty minutes and a plus-one rating.

However, Vancouver’s current priorities make a reunion unlikely. The team is more focused on adding a top-four defenseman than depth options. With Noah Juulsen performing well and Derek Forbort returning from injury, the Canucks may not find room for Dermott.

Additionally, Vancouver’s position in the waiver order—18th, based on reverse standings—makes it less probable they could secure him even if interested.

While depth is always valuable in the NHL, the Canucks seem well-covered in this area. That said, surprises happen, and hockey fans will know by 11 a.m. PT on Friday whether Dermott has been claimed or will head to the AHL with Bakersfield.
