A significant opportunity has emerged for the Boston Bruins, as a former 4th overall pick has just been placed on NHL waivers for contract termination.
Multiple reports confirm that the Pittsburgh Penguins have placed Jesse Puljujarvi on unconditional waivers, allowing for a mutual contract termination.
“Puljujarvi (PIT) on unconditional waivers to terminate.”
A Golden Opportunity for Boston
Puljujarvi is currently in the second year of a two-year contract with a modest $800,000 cap hit per season. With Bruins GM Don Sweeney openly expressing dissatisfaction with his current roster, this presents a low-risk, high-reward opportunity to bolster Boston’s depth—without giving up any assets.
Puljujarvi’s NHL Journey
Originally drafted 4th overall by the Edmonton Oilers in 2016, Puljujarvi has struggled to establish himself as a full-time NHL player, partly due to injuries and limited opportunities.
Despite stints with three different organizations—the Oilers, Carolina Hurricanes, and Penguins—he has yet to secure a permanent spot in an NHL lineup.
His best seasons came in Edmonton, where he played 65 games twice—but he has since bounced between teams.
What Puljujarvi Can Offer
Last season with the Penguins, Puljujarvi posted 3 goals, 6 assists, and 9 points in 26 games. While his offensive production hasn’t lived up to early expectations, he still provides:
- Secondary scoring potential when given ice time
- Size and physicality at 6’4″, 216 lbs
- A fresh start in a new system
Free Agent If Unclaimed
If no team claims him off waivers, Puljujarvi will officially become a free agent, free to sign with any team of his choosing.
With the Bruins searching for roster upgrades, could Puljujarvi finally find a home in Boston?
