Sandon Smith could be heading north, with the Sydney Roosters five-eighth reportedly in discussions with the North Queensland Cowboys.

According to News Corp, the Roosters’ anticipated $1 million push for veteran halfback Daly Cherry-Evans could force Smith out, despite the 22-year-old being contracted until the end of 2026.

Fox League’s James Hooper revealed on NRL 360 that Smith’s manager has already begun reaching out to rival clubs.

“I’ve heard other clubs have been made aware he’s being shopped around,” Hooper said. “It all points to the Roosters clearing the decks for a big play at Cherry-Evans.”

Although Cherry-Evans is nearing the end of his career, 19-year-old Toby Rodwell is seen as the Roosters’ long-term option in the halves, which may leave Smith surplus to requirements.

The Cowboys, still searching for the right partner to pair with Tom Dearden, appear a logical destination. They recently moved Jaxon Purdue into the halves following mixed performances from Jake Clifford.

In other news, Penrith Panthers have signed the son of Eels legend Nathan Hindmarsh, adding another chapter to the club’s growing legacy of famous rugby league bloodlines.
