The offseason is already heating up for Chicago Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson as he continues reshaping the roster in hopes of returning the franchise to playoff contention. With the 2025 NHL Entry Draft on the horizon, the Blackhawks are reportedly preparing to move on from a recent trade acquisition.
According to Scott Powers of The Athletic, Chicago is not expected to sign defenseman Victor Söderström, a former 11th overall pick. Söderström was acquired from the Utah Mammoth at the trade deadline in March, along with Aku Räty and Shea Weber’s contract, in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick.
At the time, the Blackhawks saw potential in Söderström but weren’t confident in their ability to secure him long-term. After further evaluation, it appears the team will let his rights expire without offering a contract.
Söderström, 23, had a strong 2024-25 season with Brynäs IF in the SHL, tallying 37 points (9 goals, 28 assists) in 49 games. Despite the promising stats, the Blackhawks are choosing to go in a different direction.
In related news, the organization also won’t be bringing over 2021 sixth-round pick Ilya Safonov, who recently signed with Ak Bars Kazan in the KHL.
Could Chicago Make a Splash in Free Agency?
There are rumblings that the Blackhawks could be major players in free agency this summer. One name generating buzz: Mitch Marner, a pending UFA from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
If Davidson manages to sign Marner, it would mark the franchise’s biggest free-agent addition since Marian Hossa joined from the Detroit Red Wings in 2009 — a move that helped launch the Blackhawks’ modern dynasty and deliver three Stanley Cups in six years.
