Novak Djokovic has been facing increasing scrutiny as his performances on the court have become less dominant.
Widely regarded as the greatest tennis player of all time, Djokovic holds the record for the most Grand Slam titles and has spent more weeks at World No. 1 than anyone in history. However, at 37, maintaining the consistency that defined his career has become more challenging.
His coach, Andy Murray, experienced a similar phase late in his career, when questions about retirement became frequent. Djokovic might soon find himself in the same position, as every loss is now closely analyzed—especially following his recent defeat to Botic van de Zandschulp at Indian Wells.
Former WTA World No. 9 Coco Vandeweghe weighed in on Djokovic’s form as an analyst for the Tennis Channel. While crediting van de Zandschulp for his performance, she questioned whether Djokovic had grown too accepting of losses.
“We have to give Botic credit—he showed up, played big, and deserved the win,” Vandeweghe said. “But is Novak getting too comfortable with losing?”
Although Djokovic appeared visibly frustrated by the defeat, Vandeweghe suggested he may have also lost some of the mental toughness that once made him nearly unbeatable.
“When you have a few losses like that and see him in the press room, smiling a little too much, you start to wonder—does he still have the same mental edge?” she observed.
However, she was careful not to be overly critical, acknowledging Djokovic’s legendary status.
“You can never count out the GOAT in any tournament or any situation, but you do have to question whether we’re becoming too accustomed to seeing him lose in these Masters 1000 events,” she added.
At 33, Vandeweghe understands Djokovic’s priorities. His main focus remains on winning Grand Slam titles, and his true success this season will be measured by his performance in the sport’s biggest tournaments.
“We know Novak is targeting the Slams. The real question is whether these losses now will carry over to those crucial moments.”
