The excellent Marco D’Amico has just broken some significant news concerning one of the Montreal Canadiens’ top young talents: Ivan Demidov.
Following a coaching change in Russia, Igor Larionov, the NHL legend and now head coach of SKA St. Petersburg, is reportedly making a serious push to bring Demidov back to the KHL for the 2025–26 season.
“New SKA head coach and NHL Legend, Igor Larionov, would like to have a conversation with the Canadiens about bringing back Ivan Demidov to the KHL next season on loan.
The Habs waited patiently to get Demidov to come this spring, so Larionov has his work cut out for him.”

SKA’s Ambitious Plan
Larionov is openly expressing interest in reuniting with Demidov for another year, hoping to secure a one-season loan agreement with Montreal:
“I’d like to have a conversation with the Canadiens. I’d be very interested in bringing this player back on loan for a year. Spending another season with SKA would be phenomenal. I don’t know how realistic it is, but it never hurts to ask.”
— Igor Larionov to RG Media
While Larionov’s desire is clear, any loan agreement would need mutual approval from both SKA and the Montreal Canadiens, which at this point remains uncertain.
Demidov’s Recent Performance
- NHL Regular Season (2024–25): 2 points in 2 games
- NHL Playoffs: 2 points in 5 games
- KHL Regular Season: 49 points in 65 games
- KHL Playoffs: 5 points in 6 games
At just 19 years old, Demidov has already shown flashes of brilliance in both the NHL and KHL, sparking a debate among fans and insiders on whether another season in Russia could benefit his development—or slow his integration into North American hockey.
