The Boston Bruins endured one of their most disappointing campaigns in recent memory, missing the playoffs for the first time in eight years. A major reason behind their struggles was the absence of key defensemen for large stretches of the season.
One player whose presence was sorely missed, especially on special teams, was Hampus Lindholm. The veteran blueliner managed to appear in just 17 games before a blocked shot led to a fractured patella, ending his season prematurely.
Reflecting on his frustrating year, Lindholm addressed the media at Warrior Ice Arena:
“It’s been a frustrating process, especially not being able to be out there and help the guys with the way the season’s been going,” he said. “I’ve just tried to focus on the things I can control and work through the recovery.”
Lindholm last suited up for the Bruins on November 12th in a game against the St. Louis Blues—the night the injury occurred. He attempted to fast-track his return but suffered a setback that required an additional procedure and ultimately shut him down for the rest of the season.
“I had some luck within the bad luck,” Lindholm explained. “Even with the fracture, everything in the knee stayed intact, so there’s no long-term concern. But I tried to come back a little too soon, and that set me back. We had to reassess and remove a small piece that was causing issues. It was frustrating, but the team and doctors agreed it was the best decision for the long term.”
Despite missing the remainder of the year, Lindholm remains optimistic about his recovery. He’s currently focused on full-body workouts and aims to resume skating by mid-May.
Looking ahead, Lindholm is determined to return to form and rejoin the Bruins’ blue line next season.
“I’m feeling comfortable now,” he said. “You’ve got to earn your spot every night, and that’s how it should be. I work every summer to get better and help the team win. That’s the part of my game I continue to improve year after year.”
While his status for the start of next season remains uncertain, the Bruins are hopeful their star defenseman will be ready to anchor the blue line once again when the time comes.
