The Boston Bruins have officially been linked to a new head coach following a recent announcement, but it was unexpected.
On Saturday, it was announced that the New York Rangers have fired head coach Peter Laviolette, adding another coach to the list of potential candidates for the Boston Bruins.
Just last year, Peter Laviolette ended up leading the Rangers to the Presidents’ Trophy. This year they were a bottom team, and it ultimately lead to him being fired by the Rangers.
There are multiple teams heading into the off-season that are going to be looking for a new head coach including the Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks, Philadelphia Flyers, and the Anaheim Ducks, so the Bruins may have some competition on some of their candidates.
Laviolette has had six different coaching jobs. He went 55-23-4 in 2023-24 during his first year with the Rangers, and then this year went 39-36-7, missing the playoffs.
There has been a lot of drama in the Rangers organization this year and most of it coming from General Manager Chris Drury.
Most of the Rangers “top players” all had terrible seasons this year, with a lot of players complaining about their roles in the lineup.
Laviolette does have a Stanley Cup to his name whenever he led the Carolina Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup in 2006, he also took the Flyers, and Predators to the finals before.
Laviolette has a bunch of ties to the Bruins, he is from Franklin, and is a Westfield State alum, playing a competitive three years with the Providence Bruins. He was also the head coach of the Providence Bruins for 2 years, and then an assistant in Boston in 2000-01.
Jim Montgomery was fired by the Boston Bruins early on into the year, and now they will be looking for a replacement this off-season, but upper management already stated that Joe Sacco will be in conversation for the job.
