In a surprise twist, Matildas star Mary Fowler has switched her State of Origin loyalty — and it’s all thanks to her boyfriend, NSW Blues halfback Nathan Cleary.
Despite being a born-and-bred Queenslander from Cairns, Fowler has pledged her support to New South Wales ahead of the 2025 Origin series. Cleary, who missed the entire 2024 campaign due to injury, is back to lead the Blues — and now has a new fan in his corner.
“She reckons she’s going for the Blues, so I think I’ve swung her,” Cleary told News Corp with a smile. “She already asked for a jersey, so I’m gonna have to send her one.”
But there’s one catch — Fowler won’t be in the crowd cheering him on. The Manchester City forward is currently in England, focused on recovering from an ACL injury. Cleary revealed she was initially meant to be in Australia and could have attended Game 1 in Brisbane on May 28, but her rehab schedule changed.
“It’s pretty unfortunate,” he said. “She was meant to be back last week… but City want her back in the UK. She’s attacking her rehab, so we’ll see what happens.”
While her support might raise eyebrows in Queensland, it’s a little easier to understand — after all, Fowler already plays for the Blues in England.
One thing’s for sure — love is stronger than Origin loyalty!
