Tensions were high in the Montreal Canadiens’ locker room Sunday night after a heartbreaking loss to the Washington Capitals in Game 4 of their series.
What drew the most attention — from players, fans, and media alike — was the controversial officiating throughout the game. Many felt the Canadiens were treated unfairly, with officials overlooking several incidents that heavily influenced the outcome.
One of the most talked-about moments came when Washington’s Tom Wilson delivered a heavy hit to Alexandre Carrier. Despite the severity of the contact — which some viewed as a clear headshot or even assault — no penalty was called. To make matters worse, play continued, allowing the Capitals to score the tying goal just seconds later.
Jakub Dobes Expresses Frustration with NHL Officials
Goaltender Jakub Dobes didn’t hide his frustration after the game, questioning both the referees’ judgment and the NHL’s broader officiating standards.

“I guess I don’t know the rules,” Dobes said. “I feel like the referees should have blown the whistle. I mean, it was scary, but I guess the rules don’t apply to everyone in this league.”
Dobes also took aim at Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, criticizing a hit Ovechkin delivered on Jake Evans that he believed warranted a suspension.
“I thought that deserved at least a one-game suspension,” Dobes added. “Apparently, it’s not the case. I don’t know what to say. I have to be careful. It’s unfortunate.”
The young netminder didn’t stop there — he called for the NHL to remove referees Dan O’Rourke and Frederick L’Ecuyer from officiating duties for Game 5 in Washington, as reported by Priyanta Emrith.
Martin St-Louis: “I Don’t Know What to Tell Them Anymore”
Head coach Martin St-Louis appeared equally disheartened, admitting he felt powerless addressing his players after the game.
“I don’t even know what to say to them anymore,” said St-Louis, noting that he no longer understands how playoff officiating is being managed.

Both teams reportedly received a memo from the NHL before Game 4 encouraging them to keep emotions in check. Unfortunately, it seems the referees themselves missed that message.
