As speculation heats up around this year’s NHL free agency, a major update has surfaced regarding one of the Boston Bruins’ top targets—Toronto Maple Leafs star forward Mitch Marner.
For months, rumors have swirled about the Bruins eyeing Marner, but now, former NHLer Paul Bissonnette has added fuel to the fire with fresh insight that makes this potential move look increasingly realistic.
Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, Bissonnette revealed there’s real tension between Marner and Leafs management—tension that may push the elite winger out of Toronto this summer.
“There’s a little hostility between the Maple Leafs and Marner, based on the fact that they tried to trade him at the deadline for Mikko Rantanen, who was available, and they were willing to part ways with Mitch Marner, even though he had a 100-point season,” said Bissonnette.
According to reports, Leafs GM Brad Treliving had serious talks at the deadline involving a blockbuster swap: Marner for Colorado Avalanche winger Mikko Rantanen, via a proposal reportedly funneled through the Carolina Hurricanes. With contract negotiations stalling, Treliving approached Marner with the offer—but Marner declined to waive his no-trade clause, expressing a desire to remain in Toronto.
However, the fact that Toronto entertained the deal at all has sparked speculation about how committed the team truly is to Marner, especially after his career-best 102-point season.
With veteran leaders like Brad Marchand nearing the end of their careers or potentially exiting, adding a dynamic talent like Marner could rejuvenate the Bruins and reenergize the fanbase.
