Washington Capitals legend, Alex Ovechkin, made a controversial statement about the Montreal Canadiens in recent days.
It sparked a lot of chatter when Ovechkin said that the atmosphere at Washington’s Capital One Arena was identical to that of a playoff game at the Bell Centre.
With a tone of voice that said it all, Ovechkin didn’t seem very impressed by the Bell Centre’s energy during Games 3 and 4.
When asked, “Do you think the atmosphere in the building played a role in the outcome of Game 3 in Montreal?” the legendary No. 8 responded:
“Meh, it was pretty much the same as in Washington.”
A journalist claims it’s a lie to say the atmosphere at Capital One Arena is similar to the Bell Centre
His comment definitely triggered a wave of reactions.
During Game 5 in Washington, the first game at Capital One Arena since Ovechkin’s comments, journalist Simon-Olivier Lorange posted this:
“If anyone tells you the atmosphere at Capital One Arena compares to that of the Bell Centre, they’re lying.
It’s not even a poor imitation.”
- Simon-Olivier Lorange, La Presse
I don’t know if that was a direct and pointed response to Alex Ovechkin’s remarks, but let’s just say it certainly seems like it.
In any case, Washington fans will have the chance to turn up the energy a notch, as their team now faces the Carolina Hurricanes in the second round of the playoffs.
