Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki and his wife Caitlin Fitzgerald have stunned the sports world by pledging to donate all of his 2024–2025 season earnings—including bonuses and sponsorship deals—to charity and homeless relief efforts.

In a world where professional athletes often make headlines for lavish lifestyles and massive endorsement deals, Suzuki and Fitzgerald are setting a new standard for generosity and social responsibility.

The 24-year-old center, who signed an 8-year, $63 million deal with the Canadiens in 2021, is forgoing millions this season to give back. The couple’s announcement has sparked admiration across social media and major sports outlets, with many calling the move one of the boldest philanthropic gestures in NHL history.

“This season, it’s not about points or stats. It’s about purpose,” Suzuki stated in a heartfelt message posted on his Instagram. “We’re blessed beyond measure, and it’s time we shared that with those who need it most.”

Caitlin Fitzgerald, a mental health advocate and Suzuki’s longtime partner, added: “We’ve seen firsthand how housing insecurity and lack of basic resources affect families. This is our way of standing in the gap.”

Historic Move in a League of Million-Dollar Bonuses

While NHL stars often receive large performance bonuses, very few ever choose to donate the full amount. Past contracts have included bonus clauses worth $5 million or more, yet such earnings rarely make it beyond the player’s personal portfolio.

Some of the biggest NHL bonuses in history include:

  • Connor McDavid – $15 million in signing bonus (2022–23)
  • Auston Matthews – $15.2 million signing bonus (2021–22)
  • Erik Karlsson – $13 million performance bonus (2020–21)

Suzuki’s gesture stands in stark contrast—emphasizing humanity over headlines, and compassion over accumulation.

Impactful Giving

According to sources close to the couple, the funds will be directed to a mix of local shelters in Montreal, national homeless relief programs, and grassroots mental health initiatives throughout Canada. A dedicated foundation may also be in the works to ensure long-term impact.

Fans and fellow players have already begun rallying behind the cause, with jerseys, gear, and special merch expected to be released—proceeds of which will also support these charities.

In an era where compassion can feel rare, Suzuki’s selfless act is a reminder that sports heroes can also be heroes off the ice.
