The Cincinnati Bengals are interested in adding a defensive tackle to their offseason roster.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, free agent DT Montravius Adams, who most recently played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is visiting Cincinnati Monday.
Adams played the last three full seasons in Pittsburgh after originally joining the team in the middle of the 2021 season. He re-signed with the club in 2022 on a two-year, $5 million deal. He signed a two-year, $5.25 million deal in 2024 and was released from that contract following the 2025 NFL Draft on April 28.
The Bengals know Adams well after playing against him four times in the last three years, but defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery knows him better than anyone inside Paycor Stadium.
Montgomery, who was hired as Cincinnati’s defensive line coach this offseason, coached Adams during his first four years in the NFL. Montgomery was the Green Bay Packrs’ DL coach from 2015-23. Adams was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 2017 and played for the club up until his 2020 season was cut short due to injury.
Cincinnati’s interest in Adams makes a lot of sense considering Montgomery’s history with the 29-year old. He played 45 games under Montgomery’s tutelage and is entering his ninth season in the league as a former third-round pick. The Bengals already signed T.J. Slaton, another player Montgomery coached in Green Bay, to bolster the interior of their defensive front. Adding Adams to the equation gives him another familiar face to work with.
Depth is also needed at this position in Cincinnati. B.J. Hill is currently recovering from a left foot injury, and the club did not draft a defensive lineman outside of Shemar Stewart, whom has not signed his rookie contract yet and is holding out of practicing in voluntary workouts until his deal is worked out.
The Bengals will need to clear a roster spot in order to fit Adams on the team, but if he’s coming to town, there’s a good chance he’ll sign and a corresponding move will soon follow. Expect a low-level player to be released/waived in order to fit Adams and comply with the NFL’s 90-man roster rule for the offseason.
