Zac Lomax officially no longer cares what position he plays.
The Eels and Blues star is finally content being a winger – and one of the best ones in the game at that.
Lomax had a very public falling out with Shane Flanagan after the Dragons coach shifted the 25-year-old from the centre to the wing at the start of last season.
Within a matter of weeks, Lomax had secured an early release from his contract but agreed to play out the season.
Ironically, the switch proved a masterstroke as Lomax enjoyed a breakout season with the Dragons that earned him Blues and Kangaroos honours while he was also named in the Dally M team of the year.
This season at Parramatta, rookie coach Jason Ryles started him in the centres but after just five rounds Lomax was once again shifted to the wing.
Lomax was picked for Blues after just one game back from a foot injury and inside camp he told foxsports.com.au he’ll be playing on the wing at the Eels permanently.
“I just pride myself on just competing as much as I can and wherever it is, I don’t really care to be fair,” Lomax said.
“My teammates know what they’re going to get from me each week and that’s just providing as much energy and competing as much as I can.
“For me, my best position for the team is on the wing and I love doing it.
“It allows me to get my hands on the ball more being there so wherever it is, I’m happy to play there. We’ve just going to win games so whatever helps our team, I’ll play there.
“I’m playing wing for NSW and I just can’t wait to be the best winger that I possibly can be.”
Origin great and dual international Mat Rogers said Lomax playing said Lomax playing in the centres and on the wing was chalk and cheese.
Lomax is arguably the best winger in the game, but added it was a very different story in the centres.
“He’s borderline the best winger in the game. He can play centre but he’s certainly not the best centre in the game, far from it,” Rogers told foxsports.com.au.
“But as a winger, I think he’s probably one of the best in the game. He came back in scintillating form last week, gee Parra missed him when he was out, he’s come back and made a big difference to that side, so deserves his spot.
“There’s a lot of work required of the wingers, though. Especially with (Brian) To’o and Lomax coming off one game. Whether or not they can do it for 80 minutes at Origin level, we’ll find out.”
