Rick Tocchet was once seen as the long-term solution behind the Vancouver Canucks bench. After taking over from Bruce Boudreau, expectations were high that Tocchet would lead the team for years to come. However, just a few weeks ago, the Canucks announced a surprising split with the head coach — leaving fans puzzled.
Now, Tocchet has opened up about why he made the move, and the decision goes beyond what was initially reported.
Speaking candidly, Tocchet explained:
“It was just time for a fresh start. Heading back East felt right. There were a few other small things, but overall, my experience in Vancouver was incredible. The fans, the city, the organization — they were all first class. I lived downtown, walked the city — amazing people.”
Despite praising Canucks ownership, management, and players, Tocchet admitted the decision was tough and not entirely logical on the surface:
“It’s hard to explain. Everything was positive — Francesco Aquilini and the ownership were great to me. Jim [Rutherford] and Patrick [Allvin] — I’ll always be friends with them. But I just felt it was the right time to go.”
One factor that played a bigger role than many expected? Facilities.
While Tocchet didn’t blame Vancouver outright, he acknowledged the Flyers’ state-of-the-art training complex played a part in his decision:
“I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a factor. UBC in Vancouver is nice — it’s not terrible — but Philly’s facility is next level. An 8,000 square foot gym, every amenity you can think of. It’s a great tool for a coach.”
Now the former Canucks bench boss is taking on a new challenge with the Philadelphia Flyers, and the Canucks will look to move forward under new leadership. As Tocchet closes one chapter and begins another, both teams are hoping this change marks the start of something better.
