The Boston Bruins have locked in general manager Don Sweeney for the long term, signing him to a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2027-28 NHL season. The announcement came Tuesday from team president Cam Neely, ending any speculation about Sweeney’s future as he entered the final year of his previous deal signed in 2022.
The timing of the extension coincides with the Bruins’ ongoing search for a new head coach following a disappointing 2024-25 campaign, which saw the team miss the playoffs for the first time in eight years.
“Don has navigated a difficult stretch with conviction and a clear vision for our future,” Neely stated. “He made tough decisions at the trade deadline that we believe will pay off, and he’s leading a thorough head coach search while preparing for the draft and free agency. The goal in Boston has always been to win championships, and Don understands that.”
Sweeney, now the fourth-longest tenured GM in the NHL, has compiled a 458-233-91 record since taking over in 2015. During his tenure, the Bruins have reached the postseason in eight of ten seasons and made a Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2019.
“I’m grateful to Charlie, the Jacobs family, and Cam for their continued support,” said Sweeney. “It’s a privilege to be part of this franchise. I understand the expectations in Boston – our fans demand excellence, and so do I. Our focus remains on building a championship-caliber team that makes Bruins fans proud.”
