Marc-Andre Fleury announced his retirement this season, and even after playing well for Team Canada, he has confirmed that he’s officially done.
When the Minnesota Wild lost in the first round to the Vegas Golden Knights, many expected veteran goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury to have taken the ice for the final time as a professional hockey player.
However, he quickly declared for Team Canada at the 2025 IIHF World Championship, leading to speculation that he could indeed be considering reversing his retirement decision ahead of the 2025/26 NHL campaign.
He was asked about that in a recent interview ahead of the medal stages at his final international tournament, and although he’s still looking good on the ice, he confirms that he’s done once he finishes representing Canada in Sweden.
Fleury looks like he could still play for a couple more seasons.
That, he said, will not happen.
“No, no,” he said. “I’m done. I debated it last year. I didn’t have to play as much this season, which made it a little easier on my body. But trust me, every time I played this season, I felt pretty old the next morning. I hadn’t felt that before. Age caught up.”
While many had hoped Fleury would play on beyond this season, in the hilarious manner that he’s played out his entire career, Fleury simply confirms that he felt old after every game he played this season, and that it was time to wrap things up after a stellar career spanning two decades at the top level.
It’s definitely a bittersweet moment for Fleury, his teammates and everyone that grew up watching No. 29 both on and off the ice as a fantastic player and a notorious prankster, so it’s safe to say that these final few games for Team Canada will be highly emotional.
