In a surprising move, Vancouver Canucks GM Patrik Allvin has officially placed defenseman Filip Hronek on the trade block as the team looks to clear cap space and make a major offseason splash.
A Season to Forget
The 2024-25 NHL season ended in disappointment for the Canucks, who missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the fourth time in five years. Changes followed swiftly:
- Head Coach Rick Tocchet parted ways with the team
- Adam Foote, previously an assistant, has been promoted to head coach
A Busy Offseason Ahead
Canucks President Jim Rutherford confirmed that a major roster shake-up is on the horizon. According to GOAT RADIO – Podcast, the team is actively shopping Filip Hronek, with urgency to move him before his no-movement clause kicks in on July 1.
Hronek is considered a major trade chip as Vancouver looks to restructure its core and target a return to playoff contention in 2026.
Why Move Hronek?
Despite being one of the Canucks’ most dependable blueliners, Hronek’s $7.25 million AAV contract through 2031-32 could be a roadblock for a cap-strapped roster. While some clubs may hesitate due to the long-term financial commitment, others with room to spend — such as the Columbus Blue Jackets or Utah Mammoth — might see Hronek’s elite two-way play as worth the price.
Adding to the intrigue, Vancouver now has depth on the blue line, including:
- Victor Mancini, who impressed during the Calder Cup Playoffs
- Top prospect Tom Willander, recently signed and expected to make an impact
Given that, Hronek’s availability makes more sense from a long-term planning perspective.
