Following the Colorado Avalanche’s heartbreaking first-round playoff exit to the Dallas Stars, a key veteran forward appears poised to leave the organization.
At the NHL trade deadline, the Avalanche made headlines by acquiring forward Brock Nelson from the New York Islanders—one of the most sought-after players available. The trade came at a high cost, with Colorado parting ways with promising prospects Oliver Kylington and Calum Ritchie, plus two valuable draft picks.
While Nelson brought experience and a strong two-way presence, he struggled offensively during the postseason and failed to register a goal. Still, his defensive contributions didn’t go unnoticed.
In his end-of-season remarks, GM Chris MacFarland defended Nelson’s performance:
“Brock came in and did a good job. He didn’t get a goal in the playoffs, but we don’t judge everything by goals. He’s a strong defensive player, a big body, and tough to play against. He’s a proven scorer in this league—sometimes playoffs just come down to small sample sizes.”
Nelson, 33, becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, and recent reports suggest he may be heading elsewhere this summer. No contract extension appears imminent, setting the stage for potential interest from multiple NHL teams.
Despite the playoff drought, Nelson totaled 43 points in 61 games with the Islanders this season and added 13 points in 19 games with Colorado—numbers that are likely to attract suitors if he hits the open market.
Stay tuned for updates on Brock Nelson’s future and the Avalanche’s offseason moves.
