Penrith Panthers superstar Nathan Cleary is reportedly being eyed for a stunning switch to rugby union, in what could be one of the biggest cross-code moves in recent memory.
The champion half-back has been central to the Panthers’ domination of the NRL, steering them to four straight Premierships and earning recognition as one of the elite players in rugby league.
Rugby Union Calling for Cleary?
Code-hopping is nothing new in Australian sport. In recent months, big names like Joseph Suaalii and Joey Manu have departed the NRL to test themselves in rugby union, with Suaalii joining the Wallabies. Conversely, Mark Nawaqanitawase made the leap back to league, signing with the Sydney Roosters.
In England, former British and Irish Lions winger Christian Wade is set to join the Wigan Warriors after the Gallagher Premiership season — possibly as soon as next week if Gloucester fails to make the playoffs.
Now, Nathan Cleary could be the next star to make the leap.
Insider Teases Shocking Move
During a recent episode of Stan Sports’ Rugby Heaven, host Michael Atkinson asked which State of Origin star the panel would love to see join the Wallabies. Panelist Cam Shepherd didn’t hesitate:
“I’ve been wanting to see Nathan Cleary try his hand at rugby for so long. He’s achieved everything in league—why not give it a go?”
That’s when former Wallabies World Cup winner Tim Horan added fuel to the fire:
“You might not have to wait too long, just quietly.”
Atkinson pressed for clarification:
“Are you saying Nathan Cleary is going to sign with Rugby Australia?”
Horan replied:
“There’ve been some rumours in the past two months that he’s quite keen to come to rugby.”
Though he noted the move might not align with Rugby Australia’s current youth-focused strategy, Horan acknowledged:
“If Nathan Cleary says he’s interested, you’ve got to have a coffee.”
What’s Next for Cleary?
Whether this is just talk or a serious development remains to be seen, but the buzz is real. With Cleary under contract with Penrith until 2027, any switch would be seismic for both codes.
