Sydney Roosters head coach Trent Robinson has thrown out a challenge to Mark Nawaqanitawase, urging the former rugby union star to eliminate unforced errors from his game if he wants to become one of the NRL’s top wingers.
Nawaqanitawase, just 12 games into his NRL career after switching codes, has shown flashes of brilliance on the wing — including a stunning leaping try over Savelio Tamale in the Roosters’ narrow 26-24 loss to the Canberra Raiders at Allianz Stadium on Sunday night.
But for all his highlight-reel moments, the 23-year-old has also committed costly mistakes. He dropped multiple high balls earlier in the season during a late collapse against the Bulldogs and made two unforced yardage errors on Sunday.
Robinson acknowledged both sides of Nawaqanitawase’s game, saying the winger is at a crossroads.
“At the moment, he’s got a choice,” Robinson said after the match.
“He’s such a good player. He’s 12 games in and he’s making a fair impact on the game. But he’s also made two yardage errors — both unforced. If he cleans up that part of his game, he’ll become a dominant player in this competition.”
With Dominic Young dropped for similar errors and now set to join Newcastle in the coming weeks, Nawaqanitawase’s spot appears safe — for now. But the Roosters have a wealth of emerging talent, and Robinson made it clear improvements are expected.
Despite the criticism, Robinson believes in the winger’s potential.
“He’s a quick learner and he’s hurting in there because of it,” he said.
“His technique is very good. There are just a couple of slight tweaks he needs to make. I hope teams keep kicking to him, because he’s a great catcher — but they’re unforced errors at the moment. Once he stops that, he’ll be one of the best.”
