A wave of concern swept across Edmonton today after superstar Connor McDavid unexpectedly left Oilers practice early — just days before the Stanley Cup Final.
TSN’s Ryan Rishaug broke the news, reporting that McDavid spoke briefly with training staff before heading off the ice while the rest of the team remained. Moments later, the Oilers confirmed the captain would not return to the session.
Oilers Provide Clarity on McDavid’s Status
Thankfully, panic quickly eased as the Oilers released a statement saying there was “no major issue” with McDavid. However, they did admit he is dealing with some discomfort, and his status will be monitored closely in the lead-up to the Final.
The Oilers’ championship hopes rest heavily on McDavid’s shoulders, and fans will be holding their breath as Game 1 against the Florida Panthers draws near.
Eyes on the Cup
The Oilers are chasing history, aiming to bring the Stanley Cup back to Canada for the first time since 1993. And to do it, they’ll need McDavid performing at his peak — along with elite goaltending, which has been a talking point all playoffs.
Now 28, McDavid had another dominant season with 100 points in just 67 games (26 goals), and he’s continued his hot streak with 26 points in 16 playoff games so far. Alongside Leon Draisaitl, he remains the beating heart of this team.
This could be the year the world’s best player finally hoists the Cup.
