The Boston Bruins have officially informed Joe Sacco that he will not be returning as the team’s head coach for the upcoming season.
Sacco took over as interim head coach in November following a rough start under Jim Montgomery. While Montgomery had previously led the team to success, the organization decided to move on, promoting Sacco—who had spent a decade as an assistant—with hopes of stabilizing the bench.
Following the end of the season, the Bruins began their search for a permanent head coach, with Sacco considered a potential candidate. However, according to insider Elliotte Friedman on the latest episode of 32 Thoughts, the Bruins have now informed Sacco that he will not be given the full-time role.
While this marks the end of Sacco’s time as head coach, the organization handled the decision with respect, notifying him directly before any media reports surfaced—a move that speaks to the Bruins’ professionalism and class.
The search for Boston’s next head coach continues, with Marco Sturm, Mitch Love, and Jay Leach reportedly leading the pack. An announcement is expected in the coming days.
Meanwhile, GM Don Sweeney, who recently signed a two-year extension, faces the critical task of rebuilding the roster after several key departures at the trade deadline. The ultimate goal remains clear: a return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs and bringing another banner to TD Garden.
“It’s an honor to be part of a franchise with such a storied history and passionate fan base. I fully understand and embrace the responsibility that comes with this role. Our fans have high expectations for this team, and so do I.” – Don Sweeney
