On Monday, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced that the Minnesota Wild forward had been suspended 10 games for roughing Ottawa Senators forward Tim Stutzle during the Sens’ 6-0 win on Saturday night.

It was an egregious act by Hartman, who already had a notable history of supplemental discipline. He received four minutes worth of penalties, along with a match penalty for his actions.

The suspension marks the fourth ban in the last two seasons for Hartman. He was suspended three games last April for unsportsmanlike conduct, with another two-gamer handed down in November 2023 following a dangerous trip. In April 2023, Hartman was banned one game for interference.

According to a poll on Daily Faceoff, the majority of fans agree with the Department of Player Safety’s decision. On Tuesday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss whether the punishment fits the crime.

Frank Seravalli: Totally deserved. I don’t see any redeeming quality or explainable quality of this sequence. I mean, this is not a hockey play. When you take a player in a vulnerable position, trying to win a draw, essentially take his helmet and smash it into the ice, there’s no excuse for it. That’s not part of the game and it was correctly called at the time as intent to injure. You saw the injury to Tim Stutzle’s face.

I have no issue at all with the NHL Department of Player Safety tacking on [10 games]. You mention the history…message should be sent. $487,000 hit to your wallet if your Ryan Hartman. That shouldn’t come lightly. This, hopefully, can snap him to attention to say, “Nonsense such as this on the ice, there’s no place for it in the game.”
