Jannik Sinner Admits His Calm On-Court Persona Is Just a Mask…..

Jannik Sinner, known for his cool-headed demeanor on the ATP Tour, has made a surprising confession: his calmness on court is all an act.

While some players wear their emotions on their sleeve—like Aryna Sabalenka, who never hides how she feels during a match—others do their best to keep it all inside. Ben Shelton is known for loud celebrations, and Andrey Rublev often shows his frustration visibly. But Sinner? He’s famous for barely flinching, whether he’s winning or losing.

After his straight-sets win over Rublev (6-1, 6-3, 6-4) at Roland Garros, Alizé Cornet asked Sinner how he manages to remain so stoic. The answer was surprising:

“It’s absolutely not like that. I have a storm inside me, but tennis is a very mental sport and you try not to show your emotions too much to your opponent. At the beginning of my young career the storm was also outside, not only inside.”

The 23-year-old World No. 1 explained that staying composed is part of his strategy. Tennis, in his eyes, is a psychological battle. Revealing too much could give his opponents the edge.

Despite keeping emotions in check, Sinner shared his joy about reaching the quarter-finals in Paris and getting to play under the lights.

“I’m very, very happy, because things can go quickly in a bad way, especially in best of five. They can go so long, so I’m very happy to finish in three. Night sessions here in Paris are always amazing, so thank you all for coming.”

Sinner also gave insight into his adjusted return position, a tactical shift made with his team before the tournament.

“I felt like I was out of rhythm, so this [position] gives me more rhythm, trying to go more through the ball, especially on the first serves. On the second-serve returns, I try to change it up from the back and go in close. From the back it was working well today.”

Now, he’s set to face Alexander Bublik in the French Open quarter-finals. Bublik has been one of the biggest surprises of the tournament—and he’ll be looking to pull off another shock against the top seed.
