As the 2025 NHL offseason heats up, speculation around a potential blockbuster trade is swirling — and the Montreal Canadiens may be in the perfect position to capitalize.
Over the past several days, Elias Pettersson’s name has resurfaced in trade rumors, and now it appears the Vancouver Canucks are making a decisive move. The Canucks are reportedly looking to trade Pettersson before July 1, when his full no-movement clause activates.
But that’s not all.
In a surprising development, Brock Boeser has also entered the trade spotlight. While he could hit free agency on July 1, Vancouver may also explore trading his rights ahead of time. Either way, signs strongly suggest both Pettersson and Boeser have played their last games in a Canucks jersey.
Major Clue: Pettersson and Boeser Excluded from Team Marketing
One of the most telling signs came from the Canucks’ latest marketing campaign, launched to boost season ticket sales. The campaign prominently features Quinn Hughes, Jake DeBrusk, Conor Garland, and Kiefer Sherwood — notably excluding both Pettersson and Boeser.
That’s a major statement.
Placing Kiefer Sherwood ahead of franchise names like Pettersson and Boeser in promotional material suggests a clear organizational shift — and a potential golden opportunity for other teams.
Should the Canadiens Make a Move?
With Vancouver reportedly shifting focus toward rebuilding and possibly eyeing top prospect Gavin McKenna in the 2026 NHL Draft, they may be more inclined to accept prospects and draft picks in return for their departing stars.
This opens the door for Montreal. General Manager Kent Hughes has assets — and a need for an elite center. Elias Pettersson, at 6-foot-2 and 26 years old, has tallied 45, 89, and 102 points in his last three seasons. Meanwhile, Brock Boeser, a 6-foot-1, 28-year-old winger, scored 40 goals last season and has averaged 50+, 70+, and 50+ points over the last three years.
