Novak Djokovic may have played his final match at Roland Garros following a straight-sets defeat to Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals of the 2025 French Open.

At 38, Djokovic is already defying the typical athlete’s retirement timeline. Alongside Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, he helped redefine longevity in tennis. Despite not winning a Grand Slam since the 2023 US Open, Djokovic has remained a serious contender at every major he enters.

Against Sinner, Djokovic once again demonstrated why he’s one of the all-time greats. Though he lost, the match was a high-level affair with the 24-time Grand Slam champion pushing hard against an inspired opponent. Sinner, the current World No. 1, was nearly flawless.

After the match, Djokovic had a touching moment on Court Philippe Chatrier—kissing his hand and touching the clay, suggesting a possible farewell.

“This could have been the last match ever I played here. I don’t know,” Djokovic said. “That’s why I was a bit more emotional even in the end. But if this was the farewell match at Roland Garros for me, it was a wonderful one in terms of the atmosphere and what I got from the crowd.”

He added:

“Twelve months at this point in my career is quite a long time. Do I wish to play more? Yes, I do. But will I be able to play in 12 months’ time here again? I don’t know.”

Throughout his career, Roland Garros has been one of Djokovic’s toughest challenges—largely because of his rivalry with Rafael Nadal, the king of clay. But this year, the crowd was firmly in Djokovic’s corner.

“The kind of support I received tonight was incredible,” he noted. “I don’t think I’ve ever received this much support on this stadium in my career in big matches against the best players in the world. I’m very honored to experience that.”

Though disappointed by the loss, Djokovic made sure to show appreciation to the fans and praise for his opponent.

“Congratulations to Jannik for another very good and solid performance… He showed why he’s the No. 1 in the world. He was just too solid for me tonight.”

Djokovic will now shift his focus to the grass-court season, with Wimbledon—his best chance at winning a 25th Grand Slam—on the horizon.
