Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner has reportedly made his final decision regarding his future with the team — and it’s not the news fans were hoping for.
According to respected St. Louis-based hockey reporter Andy Strickland, Marner will not be returning to Toronto. The 27-year-old winger is expected to test free agency on July 1st and sign with a new team for the 2025–26 NHL season.
“Can confirm Mitch Marner will not be returning to Toronto,” Strickland stated. “He will be playing for a new team come next season.”
The news, which quickly sparked reactions across social media, marks the end of an era in Toronto. While Marner’s departure isn’t exactly shocking given recent tensions, the confirmation still stings.
Strickland also noted that Marner’s exit may create a ripple effect, particularly for team captain John Tavares. Originally believed to be heading toward an off-season exit himself, Tavares might now find a clearer path to staying with the Leafs.
“Marner leaving Toronto could open the door for John Tavares to return,” Strickland explained. “Heading into the season, the Leafs were expected to let the veteran center walk. With Marner’s exit, that mindset has changed.”
Although no Toronto-based insiders have confirmed Strickland’s report, his credibility gives weight to the development. Many local reporters had already speculated that a breakup between Marner and the Leafs was inevitable.
Years of playoff frustrations, internal tension, and an increasingly strained relationship between Marner’s camp and the front office have led to this moment. His performance in critical postseason moments failed to meet expectations, and the off-ice dynamic appeared irreparably damaged.
Replacing a player of Marner’s caliber will be a daunting challenge. With top names like Sam Bennett likely staying put in Florida, options are limited. The Leafs face a difficult task ahead as they attempt to fill the void.
Only time will tell whether Toronto can overcome this and remain a contender.
