The Boston Bruins have wasted no time making noise this offseason, pulling off a surprising move before the Stanley Cup Playoffs have even wrapped up.
According to Scott Powers, the Bruins have acquired the rights to defenseman Victor Söderström, a former 11th overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft. Originally selected by the Arizona Coyotes, Söderström played 53 NHL games between 2020 and 2024 before heading back to Sweden. His NHL rights were later acquired by the Chicago Blackhawks, but now, Boston has taken a low-risk gamble on the 24-year-old blueliner.
The Deal:
- To Bruins: Rights to Victor Söderström
- To Blackhawks: 7th-round pick & defensive prospect Ryan Mast
Mast, who recorded 5 assists in the AHL last season, has shown limited upside. But for Chicago, getting anything in return for a player unlikely to return from Europe is a win.
Meanwhile, Söderström is coming off a standout season in Sweden, where he notched 9 goals and 37 points in 49 games—along with an impressive +28 rating. At 5-foot-11, he may be considered a bit undersized for a defenseman, but his offensive instincts and skating make him a promising project for the Bruins heading into 2025–26.
