NRL superstar Nathan Cleary has officially quashed growing speculation about a potential code switch to rugby union – dashing hopes that he’d make a move to be closer to girlfriend Mary Fowler in Europe.
Recent reports suggested Cleary might consider a shift to the 15-man game, with theories swirling that he could land in England or France, where Fowler plays for Manchester City in the Women’s Super League. However, speaking from the NSW State of Origin camp in Leura, the Penrith Panthers halfback poured cold water on the idea.
“I think I’ve got enough challenges in front of me playing rugby league,” Cleary told NCA NewsWire. “I feel like I want to squeeze the most out of my rugby league potential as I can… I’ve put so much into it, and it’s been my passion for so long.”
The 27-year-old is under contract with Penrith until the end of 2027 and is widely tipped to become the highest-paid player in NRL history if he extends his stay.
While fans and pundits have linked Cleary to rugby union, the NSW playmaker admits he doesn’t even know where the rumours are coming from.
“Growing up in New Zealand, rugby’s huge over there, so I watch the international game a bit,” he added. “I admire those guys, but I much prefer rugby league any day of the week.”
Cleary didn’t rule out a switch later in life, but made it clear he’s locked in on excelling in league right now.
“I feel like I’m coming into my prime years, and I don’t want those to go to waste by learning a new sport.”
