As Mitch Marner’s time with the Toronto Maple Leafs appears to be nearing an end, general manager Brad Treliving may already have a golden opportunity to fill the looming void in his top-six.
According to multiple reports, Marner has expressed a desire to part ways with the team, likely through free agency or a trade. With his departure potentially imminent, the Leafs face the massive challenge of replacing a player who produced 102 points last season.
Enter Nikolaj Ehlers
A timely development may have presented Treliving with an ideal option. As reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Winnipeg Jets winger Nikolaj Ehlers is expected to test the free agent market on July 1st.
Ehlers, who tallied 24 goals and 63 points this past season despite limited ice time (just 16 minutes per game), could thrive in a more prominent role — something the Leafs can offer. Though he plays primarily on the left wing, his speed, creativity, and offensive instincts make him one of the most dynamic wingers set to hit the open market.
Cap Considerations
While Marner could demand upwards of $11 million annually, Ehlers is projected to command closer to $10 million per season — a more manageable figure for a player with high-end upside. Though not quite at Marner’s elite production level, Ehlers could very well flourish in Toronto’s high-powered offense and provide solid value.
Will Toronto Make the Move?
The competition for Ehlers’ signature will be fierce, and his natural position on the left side may raise questions about fit. Still, with the right deployment and support, he could be a perfect addition to Toronto’s top-six — and a fan favorite in no time.
