The St. Louis Cardinals appear to be preparing for a significant shift in their infield as rumors swirl about their plans to replace Nolan Arenado at third base. According to a well-placed insider, the Cardinals’ front office is exploring options for the hot corner, fueling speculation about the future of the 10-time Gold Glove winner with the franchise.

Arenado, who has been a cornerstone of the Cardinals’ lineup since joining the team in 2021, had a challenging 2024 season. Though still a respected presence on the field, his offensive production dipped slightly, with a .248 batting average, 23 home runs, and 81 RBIs.

The Cardinals, who failed to make the playoffs in 2024, may be looking to refresh their roster as part of a larger rebuild strategy. Sources close to the organization suggest that Arenado’s contract, which runs through 2027, could also be a factor, as the team considers reallocating resources.

Several names have emerged as potential successors to Arenado at third base:

  1. Jordan Walker: The young phenom has already impressed in the outfield but could transition to third base, his original position, to fill the void.
  2. Nolan Gorman: Gorman has shown offensive potential and versatility, making him a candidate for an expanded role on the infield.
  3. Free-Agent Targets: The Cardinals could pursue established third basemen such as Matt Chapman, who is currently available on the free-agent market.

Arenado’s Future

Despite the rumors, Arenado remains under contract, and it’s unclear whether he would be traded or moved to another position. The veteran’s defensive prowess remains unmatched, and his leadership is invaluable to the younger players on the roster.

When asked about his future, Arenado recently stated, “I’m focused on helping this team win, no matter where I play. I love St. Louis and want to be part of bringing a championship here.”

The Cardinals are expected to address the issue during the offseason, with spring training looming in February. Whether they stick with Arenado or move in a new direction, fans can expect a busy winter as the team looks to reestablish itself as a contender in the National League.
