Why the Minnesota Wild Must Not Trade Marco Rossi in the 2025 Offseason….

The Minnesota Wild once again exited the Stanley Cup Playoffs early, falling to the Vegas Golden Knights in the First Round. As another offseason begins, questions swirl about the team’s future. Among the most pressing: should the Wild trade Marco Rossi?

The short answer? Absolutely not.

Rossi is finally blossoming into the player the Wild hoped he’d be—and trading him now would be a massive mistake.

Breakout Season

Rossi took a major leap forward in the 2024-25 season, recording 21 goals and 32 assists (53 points) in just 68 games—up from 40 points in a full 82-game slate the year prior. That’s not just improvement. That’s breakthrough territory.

He earned NHL Player of the Week honors after an eight-point explosion across three games and posted a 12-point streak over 12 contests—all while Kirill Kaprizov was sidelined with injury. Rossi showed he could carry the load when it mattered.

His Contract is Still a Bargain—for Now

Rossi remains on his entry-level contract, making him a cost-effective producer—something every cap-strapped team dreams of. Rumors suggest he’s seeking a $7–8 million extension. That’s a big jump, yes, but worth exploring, especially if the Wild want to build a contending core.

Minnesota is focused on locking up Kaprizov long-term. But once that’s done, Rossi should be next in line for an extension—ideally a three-year bridge deal that keeps the team flexible.

He Fits the Core’s Timeline

Let’s not forget: Rossi is only 23. He fits perfectly alongside other young Wild stars like Kaprizov, Matt Boldy, and Brock Faber. If Minnesota wants to hang with Western Conference powerhouses like the Golden Knights, Stars, and Avalanche, they need to grow together—not tear things down.

Chemistry Can’t Be Overlooked

Rossi has already developed great chemistry with Boldy and veteran Mats Zuccarello. That potential second line could be a dangerous weapon. Why break it up now, especially when Rossi’s understanding of the NHL pace and physicality has finally clicked?

A Trade Likely Won’t Bring Equal Value

Yes, Rossi was demoted to the fourth line in the playoffs—something that may have hurt his confidence. But if Minnesota shops him now, teams will look to buy low, assuming Rossi’s 53-point campaign was a one-off.

Trading a young, still-developing center at less than full value? That’s a risk the Wild shouldn’t take.
