Rick Tocchet was recently named the new head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers, but it’s now been revealed that he declined an interview with another high-profile team: the Boston Bruins.
As the 2025 NHL offseason began, eight teams were in search of a new head coach. Tocchet, having parted ways with the Vancouver Canucks, was one of the most sought-after names on the market. Ultimately, he returned to familiar ground, joining the Flyers—an organization he spent 11 seasons with as a player. His hiring was officially announced just days ago.
Now, a new report from RG Media has added a surprising twist to the story. According to sources, while the Bruins were considered a serious contender to land Tocchet, he turned down the opportunity to even meet with them.
The reason? Concerns over the future of Boston’s General Manager, Don Sweeney, and his history of quickly parting ways with head coaches.
Rick Tocchet’s best answer was about communicating with players of a new generation different from his own career
“I’m a partner with the players. It’s not a dictatorship.” “That’s my job to steer the ship, but I think it’s important that you let the player steer the ship too.” pic.twitter.com/xmXF8tUEO0
“Tocchet’s hesitation with Boston came down to two key things: Sweeney’s uncertain future—some say he may only have 1–2 years left—and his track record of not giving coaches much time,” a source confirmed.
🚨 Sources reveal Rick Tocchet didn’t pursue the Bruins’ head coach role due to uncertainty around GM Don Sweeney’s future and firing record.
While the Bruins may have the stronger roster on paper, Tocchet was drawn to the stability and long-term potential he sees in Philadelphia. Choosing familiarity and the opportunity to help build something sustainable, Tocchet made the call to return to the Flyers.
In doing so, Boston missed out on what many consider the top available coach this offseason. And with other notable names like David Carle, Joel Quenneville, and Mike Sullivan already accepting new positions, the Bruins’ list of options is quickly shrinking.
